1 17 May: International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia

The Dutch government will be hosting a broad international IDAHO Conference. The aims for the conference are: 'to promote emancipation of LGBT people, to combat violence and discrimination based on gender (identity) and sexual orientation, and to take stock of public leadership, policy achievements and cooperation in Europe and beyond.'

2 Human Rights

On the International Day of the Freedom of Expression on 3 May, Netherlands Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Timmermans has given a statement to promote Freedom of expression world wide.

3 Abdication and Investiture

On 30 April the Queen will sign the instrument of abdication in the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. In the afternoon of the same day, the investiture of the new King will take place in the Nieuwe Kerk also in Amsterdam. More information on this can be found in the enclosed document.

9 Speech by H.M. the Queen

As you all know, in a few days I hope to celebrate my 75th birthday. I am thankful that I have been granted the opportunity to do so in good health. At the end of this year we shall mark the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, an occasion that ushered in a new era in our history. The fact that these two special events coincide led me to decide to relinquish the throne this year. It seems to me to be an appropriate moment to take this step, which I have been considering for some time.

10 Dutch minister appointed president of Eurogroup

Minister of Finance Jeroen Dijsselbloem, 46, has been appointed president of the Eurogroup, the informal administrative body of the states of the Eurozone. ‘It’s a great honour for me to be given this job, particularly in these difficult economic times for the eurozone.’
